There is so much to say about the history and the people of Rhodes and
it would require many pages. This is just a few words out of the millions
words that it would normally require.
Dated back to the prehistoric period, Rhodes was one of the most influential Island-States since the the Homeric days. Its civilization flourished during the 5th and 2nd century B.C., when the Acropolis and the Colossus of Rhodes (one of the 7 wonders of the world) were built.
Later, the island was invaded by the crusaders, (the Nights of Saint John of Jerusalem), who stayed in the island until 1486, when the island fell under the Ottoman Empire. And these were the darkest days of its history. Finally, in 1913 the Italians took the island from the Turks and this is when the island started shinning again. Although the Italians were conquerors, yet they loved the island, reconstructed all the ancient monuments and built new buildings, organized the city, established a planning and zoning law. When in 1947 the island re-united with the Motherland, Rhodes was the jewel of the Aegean!
Today, Rhodes is one of the most visited islands in the Aegean Sea. Nearly a million tourists visit Rhodes island every year! |
