Mournies Chania

The small town of Mournies is 4 kilometres south of Chania and it is standing in this location since the Byzantine period. It is surrounded by many monastic dependencies and, for that reason, many beautiful churches and monasteries can be visited in and around the town. Mournies is the seat of the municipality of the same name which includes various other villages scattered in the area (20 of them) and has about 5300 inhabitants.

It owns its name from the many mulberry trees (mournies in Greek) standing in the village and around. During the 17th century Mournies was famous for its many magnificent villas which were owned by local noblemen.
