About Parikia Paros

From the first look, we realise that the tourist development has affected the shape of the town. Hotels, rent rooms, shops with all kinds of souvenirs, restaurants and coffee shops, offer their services to the visitors.

However, walking in the labyrinthine narrow streets of the old town, you will find out that the picturesque ness of the island is still present.

Whitewashed houses and pavements, flower pots with multi-coloured flowers in the balconies, commercial stores full of people, microscopic churches and the ruins of the Castle in the middle of the old town, compose a picture that charms everyone that visits Paros for the first time.

In the entrance of the port, a white windmill welcomes the visitors, memento of another era. To the right, on the road along the coast, there are restaurants, hotels and camping sites. In front of us, there is a sandy beach for those in mood for more explorations.

The road leads us to Krios and to the cape of Agios Fokas and from there, to the cave of Parios, poet of the ancient times, Arhilohos.

This cave, according to tradition, was the place where the poet was seeking for inspiration. In this area, a relic of the ancient times and the ruins of Dilios, a sanctuary dedicated to Artemis of Dilos were found. On the hill behind the town, there was the sanctuary of Aphrodite. On the left side of the port, starts a big road, always crowded during summer time.

In this road we will again come across restaurants, bars and coffee shops. In the end of the road, towards the hill of Agia Anna stand the huge night clubs of Parikia, one of the things that attracts young people to this beautiful island. It's worth visiting Agia Anna only to admire the view.

From one side we can see Parikia and the seaside road while on the other side we can see the Aegean Sea, Antiparos and in the background the contour of Sifnos and Serifos.

Leaving the seaside road, it's time to wonder in the narrow streets of the old center of the town. Following Mavrogenous street from the square of Ekatontapyliani, we arrive at the house of Mando Mavrogenous, a heroine of the Independence War 0f 1821 who died in 1848. This captain of the Independence War mainly acted in Mykonos but her origin was from Paros.
