GENERAL INFO

Nafpaktos is a small historical and picturesque town in a distance of 8 km. from Antirio and 216 km. from Athens. It’s built amphitheatrically on the side of of a hill, which lies on the sea opposite to Peloponnese between Delphi and Messologi. The old town situated in the Walls has kept its own style, its old face. Your look meets everywhere the beauty, the harmony, the serenity. Very easy you can find out small or big traditional particularities even among the cement and the antennas of modern buildings.

Walking between the paved narrow streets, you have the feeling that you are going to meet the heroes of 1821 as Tzavelas, Botsaris, Farmakis, the young captain of a fire ship Anemoyiannis with the torch in his hand or you are going to listen to the voice of Yiannos Vlachoyiannis.

Watching from the top of Nafpaktos’castle the panorama of Corinthian and the opposite Peloponnesian line you are out of the reality in some way. Down, in front of your legs, you can see the small picturesque Venetian port dandle between yesterday and today.

A small historical and picturesque town

In the 3.500 years of history of this city, were written many pages of history, all important for the Nation’s process. From the Dorian’s Cathode till today, Nafpaktos was always to the front. To battles and culture. Men full of heroism, splendor, imagination, romanticism and delicacy, they were born, grew up and they acted in this place as Menaichmos, Soidas, Isiodos, Karkinos, Apis, Keos, Agelaos, Thervandes, Vlachoyiannis, Tzavelas, Farmakis etc.

Nafpaktos or “Lepanto” in the Venetian way of speech, it was thrashed many times by intruders, conquerors, pirates, epidemics and earthquakes. The historic calendar of Nafpaktos is full of significant dates. One of the most gorgeous events of its tempestuous history is the event of Nafpakto’s sea fight of great importance, in 1571, when the Christian forces won and it was detained the Mohammedans’ advance towards Europe preserving the European civilization.

Nafpaktos’s got all these elements for being picturesque. Green enough, plenty of waters, big old platans, clear sea, spotless yards with beautiful gardens, a marvelous fort and small port together which is the smallest and the most beautiful in all over Mediterranean and its powerful castle that is “testifier” of its adventurous history.

Its climate is considered one of the best of the country. It is mild with a soft winter and a cool summer. It’s got increased rainfalls, short periods of summer aridity and a great sunlight. The middle temperature of the place is 18ºC. Architectonic and town-planning of Nafpaktos. Today, the town it’s got the look of a civil composition which is developed along a seaside of 5 and more kilometres.

The historical centre

The historical centre which is immured, it appears an interesting, traditional town-planned set that in combination with the successive battlements of the Venetian fort compose an historic environment. The area is structured under strict orders of constructing and esthetic expression. The road dredge is thick with narrows cobbled roads and stone stairs.

To the left and to the right of the historical centre there is a town-planning with two rectilinear road axis where were built until 1930 luxurious civil residences with occidental architectonic standards.

The types of the traditional residences that we meet in Nafpaktos’ town is: a) folk civil residence of two floors b) neoclassic residence with isolated patterns in the west side of the town (Fanni) c) recent civil residence of the Interwar’s period to the east side of the town.

For the preservation of the traditional figure of the town today, they are used some morphological limits of structure. In the historical centre is not allowed any interference which may damage the town-planning and round this area, it is permitted only the structures that includes three floors. The coverage must be made with Byzantine pantiles.
