Ski Center
The newest and the most modern Ski Center in Greece is only 14 km. From the city of Kalavryta . Its establishments are on Mount Chelmos at an altitude of 2.330 meters at the site of “Vathia Laka”. Seven lifts are in function and serve course grounds of all levels at a total length of about 25 kilometers.
In addition, the visitor can find cross-country ski districts as well as hiking footpaths. The Ski Center also offers a ski school with specialized instructors, a fully equipped First-Aid center and shops, which rent out ski equipment and snowmobiles to its guests.
Needless to say that an expedition to the “Neraidorachi”, one of the peaks of Mt. Chelmos, is a unique experience. From there, those who have the necessary historic “charge” can reach the waters of the river Styx, where according to the historian Hesiod the oaths to the Gods were given.
Kloukinochoria
Just 11 Km away from the Ski Center picturesque villages -called Kloukinochoria- are scattered on the slopes of Mt. Chelmos. The area was considered the headquartes of the Kalavryta leading man and until today the towers which had been built for defense purposes still prevail.
Th visitor has the opportunity to admire the Alpine lake Tsivlu, relax under the huge plane trees or hike in the “Zarouchla” forest.
The Cave of the Lakes
Near the village Kastria, half an hour from Kalavryta lies the “Cave of The Lakes”, 2 km long with its thirteen cascading lakes and its high, colorful stalactites. In winter when the snow melts, the cave is transformed into a subterranean river with natural waterfalls while in summer, part of the cave dries up and a lace work of stone basins and dams are revealed.
This rare creation of nature is unique in Greece and it also has rich archaeological interest. Human and animal fossils have been found on its lower floor and as a result this part of the cave is intended to become a cave laboratory of International standing.
The Springs of the Aroanios River
Descending the Cave of the Lakes, one can admire the village Planitero and the springs of the Aroanios river. The landscape is worth seeing while the tall plane trees and the rushing waters of the river can easily compose an endless song. There the visitor can relax and enjoy fresh salmon or trout the are bred there and buy therapeutic herbs of Mt. Chelmos.
Climbing up Mt. Chelmos
The Chelmos mountain is part of the Peloponnese northern mountain range keeping the third position among the mountains of Peloponnese after Tayggerus and Ziria. Mt. Chelmos attracts the interest of mountaineers and the E.O.S. (Hellenic Alpine Club) of Kalavryta has built a shelter in the place of “The Bird's Spring” at an altitude of 2.100 meters.
Furthermore, those who love winter sports can use the facilities of the Ski Center and from there fulfil their trips towards the higher tops of the mountain. |
History |
|
Near the city of Patras and at a distance of two hours and half from Athens, Kalavryta is the starting point for excursions in the surrounding areas while the sea is just a forty-minute drive.
In ancient times Kalavryta was located between the churches of St. George and St. Catherine and its then name was “Kynethi”. Its today's name was given during the Middle Ages from the words “Kala Vryta”, which means “Clear Waters”.
The town of Kalavryta is located in the east of - Achaia, where during the revolution against Turks in 1821 the men of the area fought bravely starting from the monastery of St. Lavra.
The Turks burnt down Kalavryta twice, while on the 13th of December 1943 the Germans did the same as well. They also shot all the male inhabitants over the age of 12.
The city of Kalavryta has become a great tourist resort during the last decade.
St. Lavra Just 6 km from Kalavryta the historic banner of the revolution of 1821 is treasured in the monastery of St. Lavra. The monastery was built in 961 A.D. at tan altitude of 961 meters and once had 961 monks. From there the message “Freedom or Death” was launched to urge the Greeks to fight against the Turkish occupation. Under the historic plane tree the banner of the revolution was raised.
At the monastery there are also many murals, which have been destroyed by fires and the icon of St. Lavra. Among the heirlooms there are, an old Gospel, a gift by Catherine the Great, golden crosses, shrines and a priceless collection of ancient Christian objects.
Opposite the monastery on the slope there is a monument on which the names of the fighters which fell in 1821 are written.
Mega Spileon
While driving up towards Kalavryta , from the village of Diakofto, the monastery of Mega Spileon is situated at an altitude of one thousand meters. The eight-floor monastery which was built in 362 A.D. appears to be hooked on a rock, giving the visitor the feeling of awe and respect. The sculptured icon of Holy Mary, work of Loukas the Evangelist, is made of wax and mastich, which represents an attraction for thousands of tourists.
In the museum of the monastery holy relics and heirlooms as well as wooden-carved crosses, ancient manuscripts, and Gospels are treasured.
Funicular Railway - The Vouraikos River Gorge
The city of Kalavryta can also be approached, from Diakofto, by the one of a kind “Funicular Railway”. It was designed by French technicians and considered a unique achievement at that time. This achievement was the only exit of the Kalavryta country towards major cities.
The journey along the Vouraikos river is an unforgettable experience all year round. The intense alternation of the landscape, the lapping of the river in combination with the variety of colors, dazzles the traveler. The Vouraikos gorge is part of the international hiking path E4 and has been established as the Panhellinic passage every May. |
