ROUTES

Two basic routes cross the island starting from Chora. The first route leads to the area of Epano Meria (Upper Area) the northeastern part of the island. The second leads after it branches into two main roads to the rest of the island.

These two routes connect between them, since the branch of the first one after going through the near by villages of Mountado and Karya, meets with the second at the point that the village Tripotamos is presently located. This connecting road goes through some water ravines and vegetation and at its highest point someone faces a amphitheatric view of Chora and the open sea.

For the best sightseeing of the island four routes stand out. 

Taking the first route, you follow the old road that will enable you to get to know the northeastern part of Tinos, with its graphic villages, the very important monastery of Kechrovounio, Tsiknia and finally end up at the gulf of Leivadia.

Starting your excursion, you follow the old county road toward Epano Meri and you are lead to the connecting road, reaching very soon Mountados, a beautiful village that overlooks a small evergreen valley. Here you can see the church of Apostle John. Karya is very near by. Three kilometers away is Tripotamos with the Presentation of the Virgin Mary. This is were K. Kastoridis the philosopher resides. Based on tradition, the establishment of the monastery of Kechrovounio is owed to three sisters that descended from Tritopotamos.

Graphic village

You continue towards Epano Meri. In front of you is Agios Nikolaos. It plays the role of the traffic policeman since it divides the area to upper and lower. Immediately after that you spot the picturesque villages of Mperdemiaro and Triantaros. Even though foreigners have bought houses in this area, the style still remains Greek. Only a short distance away from here is Arnados the highest village of Tinos. In these villages you come across the churches of Agious Apostolous, Koimisis of Theotokos and Analipsi.

Continuing you reach Lychnaftia, one of the most beautiful coastal locations of Tinos. Taking the various pathways someone can reach Kioura and Agio Ioanni Porto. There is a local bus that leads to the various villages giving the visitor enough time to enjoy the scenery. Worth noticing is the Ecclesiastic Museum of Arnados and the Monastery of Kechrovounio. The monastery is a large building construction with many churches . It is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The simple cell where the nun Pelagia lived is preserved (she was pronounce a saint in 1970). A museum operates were old icons and old objects are exhibited. The silver plated icon of the Virgin Mary which belonged to the ship of K. Kanari the fire-raiser, is also thought as a relic.

Beach of Kionion

 After that you come across Kechro, Tzado and Mesi, small beautiful villages. Towards the west you come across the villages of Xombourgo, Volax, Koumaro, Kato Meri, towards the north Falatado, towards the east Steni, Mouslou, Mirsini and Potamia.

On the second route you will first find the coastal area situated on the west of town with the archeological site of Kionion and the cave of Gastria. Continuing and following the new road you reach the valley of Tarambados with its fancy dovecotes reaching up to the gulf of Agios Romanos. The western road leads to the new port crossing the villages of Stavros, Agios Markos and the beach of Kionion.


You return to town in order to follow the new country road. After 4 kilometers you encounter Tripotamos. Towards the left you reach Ktikado. The oldest bell-tower of Tinos is located here at the church of Timios Stavros. Also the church of Ypapandi with the icon of the Virgin Mary is a sight worth visiting together with the marble external entrance to the temple. During Easter Monday the whole island eats united at one table. With a small detour someone can visit the picturesque village of Hatzirado.

The country road leads to Kato Meri and to Kambos and Okso Meri. From Kambos the road leads to Smardakito. Immediately after that is the village of Tarambados, the most recent village of Tinos. From here someone can go to Panagia of Vrisiou and to the chapel of Agia Marina.

During your third route and following the new road, you will come across the heart of Catholic Tinos, of Kato Meria and Kolymbithres. 

Village


Following the new country road and after you pass from Tripokambos you reach the church of Saint Nikitas. We take the direction towards the right to Kato Meri. At Xynara worth seeing are the churches of Panagia Rodadios and Saint Peters and Paul. Here is were the Catholic record office is housed. It includes files of acts of the episcopes of Tinos, correspondence with the Holy See, documents concerning government - church relations , records of ecclesiastic courts, ecclesiastic documents, codes and registry books.

After Loutra you meet the village of Skalados. After one kilometer you come across Volax right before Koumaro. Koumaros is located on a beautiful gorge. This is were Xombourgo is located. A rocky hill 640 meters high. Its name originates from Sobborgo which means settlement neighboring to the town. At the base of this steep hill, the road yields towards the south and crossed the plateau of Flatados and reaches Pentostrato.

Krokos is a small village next to Loutra. A kilometer after that is the village of Sklavochori where Nik. Gizis the painter was born. Komi is a large village with a guest house and food stores. A little after you come across Agapi and after 4 klms you meet the gulf of Kolymbithres. The greater part of the gulf includes five beaches for swimming. At the Small Kolybithra a hotel, restaurant and cafe bar operate. The paved road stops at Kalloni, the ancient name was Kelia. After one kilometer are the villages of Kato Klisma and Aetofolia.

Village of Sxoinaki

During your fourth route you will see all the area of Ekso Meria with is rich folklore architecture with its zenith the village of Pyrgos, an open-air architectural Museum, to land up at the northern part, approximately one mile away from Andros.

You follow the road towards the western Tinos. After 6 kilometers you find Kardiani. Here you go to the beaches of Giannaki and Kalivies. Continuing we meet the Ysternia and after five kilometers is the village of Sxoinaki. After the villages of Venardado and Platia someone reaches Pyrgos.
