Ireon Village
The fishing village of Ireon is only five hundred metres and a short
stroll away. It surrounds a pretty central square where there are ample
restaurants, cafes, supermarkets, greengrocers and many other shops
next to the sea and shingle beaches.
The restaurants are famous for their local wines and fish. The harbour
is busy with small fishing boats out both at night and in the early
morning.
The village has a bus services to the larger villages of Pythogorian
and Samos Town.
From Samos Town buses are available to all other parts of the island.
Taxis are readily available in Ireon. Car and motor bike hire is also
available.

Brief History of Samos An island of eastern Greece
in the Aegean Sea off the western coast of Turkey. First inhabited in
the Bronze Age, it was later colonized by Ionion Greeks and became an
important commercial and maritime power in the 6th century BC.
Controlled in turn by Persia, Athens, Sparta, Rome, Byzantium and the
Ottoman Empire, the island became part of modern day Greece in 1913.
There are many famous Samarians (from Samos) such as Aristarchus
(astronomer and mathematician), Epicures (philosopher), Aesop (fable
writer) and most famous of all, Pythagoras (mathematician and
philosopher).

Nearby places worthy of a visit
Pythagorian The
original capital of Samos and birthplace of Pythagoras the
mathematician. The large village is only five kilometres from Ireon and
easily accessible by bus or taxi.
Here there are many shops, restaurants, tavernas and two banks.
The main feature of Pythagorian is the marina and harbour where ocean
going yachts berth and there is a regular ferry and hydrofoil service
to other Aegean Islands

Mili Village About three kilometres from Ireon.
This is a traditional Greek village with a small square, the local
church, which is worth viewing from the inside, two tavernas and a
small supermarket. There is a local pottery shop that is also well
worth a visit. By road the walk takes you alongside olive groves,
orange and lemon orchards and takes about forty minutes.
|
Pagondas Village
For the more hardy walkers. About six kilometres from Ireon, some going uphill. A larger village than Mili.
|
The Temple of Hera This is the temple to Hera the
wife of Zeus. It is only one kilometre from the edge of Ireon and open
all week except Mondays. Well worth a visit but unfortunately only the
ruins remain.

Tours of Samos Each Sunday the local bus company
offers a tour visiting some of the more distant and remote areas of the
island. The itinerary usually includes visits to a monastry, a mid
morning break at a countryside taverna for snacks and coffee, some time
in another resort before returning to Ireon.
Places may be booked through a travel agent in Pythagorian.
Private companies also offer similar tours.
