History of Paros
The temple of Apollo in Dilos, the Hermes of Praxiteles in Olymbia, the Aphrodite of Milos, the sanctuary of Dimitra and Asklipios in Paros, are made by the famous marble of Paros. This marble was in great demand in Classic architecture and sculpture.

For the island, this was the catalytic factor because the life and the economy of Paros, during the Classical period, were being supported by the marble quarries of the island. Ancient samples of this famous marble are scattered in the road between Parikia and Lefkes that leads to the ancient quarries.

From there, originated the raw material for all the masterpieces of the antiquity, that decorate the great Greek temples in Athens, Delfi, Olymbia, Tegea and even Constantinople

Characteristic of this marble is the transparency, which approaches the 3.5 cm, more than the Italian Carara's marble of 2.5 cm.

If you like mountains and the mountainous villages, then you have to go, only 10 km away from Patikia, to Lefkes.

Lefkes has been built with an excellent town-planning, amphitheatrically, and the only thing that stands out from the white houses is the colourful windows and the bougainvilleas. The characteristic point of the village is the church of Agia Triada to the east - built by the marble of Paros - with its white bell tower and its yard. The rooms for your accommodation are very well looked after by the inhabitants of the village and decorated according to the Cycladic style.

It's worth saying that on the road to Lefkes there are many small villages, as Elitas with its river, Marathi - a picturesque settlement on the asphalted road - and Kostas, a Mediterranean village that impresses with its traditional style, its alleys and the picturesque small taverns.

  History of cyclades

In a small distance from Lefkes is the village of Dragoulas or Prodromos with monasteries as Panagia and Agios Panteleimonas.

The plethora of marbles outside the village confess the name of the next village. It is called Marmara (= marbles). Its characteristic is the old mansions and the ancient potteries where they make pots.

If you want to enjoy the unique pliancy of the white houses in Marpissa you have to take the road to the south. This village is 40 m above sea level and it's full of churches.

The most important is the royal church of Metamorphossis where there are icons of 17th century. But the fame of Marpissa does not stop here. You can admire the impressive view from the monastery of Agios Antonios. Fishing boats, sea trees, beautiful small houses and busy life are at Pisso Livadi.

Its fish taverns in Paros promise tasty delicacies that don't let anyone discontented if they choose the shade of their tables. Now, if you have already eaten and you want to relax in a peaceful beach listening to the sound of the sea and the sweet whisper of the seagulls then you have to walk a bit further, towards the beach of Logaras.

Chrysi Akti (= golden beach): only its name promises a lot and of course nothing than the reality. It's an endless golden sandy beach with blue clear waters that you must definitely visit.

Running waters, crofts, hotels and tourism are all these things that the village of Drios provides. It offers the coolness of the sea and the hospitality of its inhabitants, always ready to serve you.

Calmness, peacefulness and quiet are some of the characteristics of Ambela's beach. In combination with the traditional delicacies, it is a place that will reward you generously.

Now if you are in the mood for games and crowded places, you can go to the beach of Pounta where you will be satisfied.

Paros cyclades   Peace and insouciance offers the rural village of Agairia. It's got beautiful houses, built in insular style on the mountain's slope, and picturesque yards. If you like walking, you can take the road that leads to the centre of the village and climb up the mountain reaching the old style monastery of Agioi Theodori.

From here, the view is magnificent and charms you with the blue of the Aegean Sea. It gives you the sense that you are all alone and the luckiest man in the world. Family tourism offers the village of Alyki. It is ideal for one-day excursions and for spending the night under the cool breeze and the subdued light of stars.
