Nafpaktos is a small historical and picturesque town

Nafpaktos is not only a picturesqueness. Its inhabitants along with their daily effort for survival, they battle also for the preservation and the continuation of their cultural and literary traditions. Many people from Nafpaktos, in Greece and on abroad, they have developed strong mental and artistic activity.

Part from the historical event of the Dorian’s Cathode with Karneas, the eminent poet Karkinos, the famous (before Feidias) sculptors Menaichmos and Soida, Nafpaktos’s got a rich tradition. In the recent years, many people of Nafpaktos shined, as the historian Yiannis Vlachoyiannis, the learned brothers Stamatis and Charilaos Stamatiou, the brothers Athanasiadi Nova, Yiannis Rondiris etc.

Regarding the social and cultural infrastructure, they operate in the Municipality six Elementary schools and nine Nursery schools. There are also three High schools, three Middle schools and a Technical middle school. Still, there is from 1960 the Papacharalabeios Central Library of Nafpaktos, which is one of the most important libraries of our country and in Aitoloakarnania’s prefecture.

Forest

This library was established by a great benefactor, the memorable Demetrious Papacharalambous in a neoclassic building which was built for this purpose in the centre of the town. Today, it belongs to the Public Libraries of the Ministry of National Education and Religions. Many movers are activated organizing cultural manifestations in Nafpaktos, having as a main purpose, the progress of the mental and cultural level of the inhabitants as also the preservation of the local society and tradition.

These movers are: the Municipality, the Nafpaktos’ studies association, the Cathedral, the Transfiguration monastery, the Papacharalabeios Central Library of Nafpaktos, the teachers and the infant school teachers club of Nafpaktias etc.
