It is located 78 nautical miles (144 km) south-east of Athens. The island is comprised of the municipalities of Ermoupoli, Ano Syros, and Poseidonia. Ermoupoli is the capital of the island and the Cyclades. It has always been a significant port town, and during the 19th century it was even more significant than Pireus. Santorini is a small, circular archipelago of volcanic islands located in the southern Aegean Sea, about 200 km south-east from Greece's mainland. It is also known as Thera (or Thira, Greek , IPA: ), forming the southernmost member of the Cyclades group of islands, with an area of approximately 73 km˛ (28 mi˛) and a 2001 census population of 13,670. It is comprised of the Municipality of Thíra (pop. 12,440) and the Community of   pop. 1,230, which includes 268 inhabitants who are actually on the offshore island of Therasia, lying to the west). They have a total land area of 90.623 km˛, which also includes the uninhabited islands of Nea Kameni, Palaia Kameni, Aspronisi, and Christiani (all part of the Municipality of Thira). Rhodes  is the largest of the Dodecanese islands in terms of both land area and population, situated in eastern Aegean Sea. This Greek island lies approximately 11 miles (18 km) to the west of the Turkish shores, situated between the Greek mainland and the island of Cyprus. As of 2001, it has a population of 117,007 of which 53,709 reside in the capital city of the island. Crete is the largest of the Greek islands at 8,336 km˛ (3,219 square miles) and the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean. Crete is a popular tourist destination; its attractions include the Minoan sites of Knossos and Phaistos, the classical site of Gortys, the Venetian castle at Rethymno, and the Samaria Gorge, as well as many other natural sites, monuments, and beaches.Crete was the centre of the Minoan civilization (ca. 2600–1400 BCE), the oldest civilization in Europe.  Corfu is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea. It lies off the coast of Albania, from which it is separated by straits varying in breadth from 3 to 23 km   including one near Butrint and a longer one west of Thesprotia. The island is part of the Corfu Prefecture, and includes twelve of the sixteen municipalities or communes in the prefecture and over 96 percent of its population  the four excluded municipalities are Ereikoussa, Mathraki, Othonoi, and Paxoi, which are all on separate islands.The principal town (pop. 28,185) of the island is also named Corfu, or Kérkyra in Greek, as is its municipality (pop. 39,487). Corfu is home to the Ionian University. Athens, the capital and largest city in Greece, dominates the Attica periphery: as one of the world's oldest cities, its recorded history spans at least 3,000 years. Today the Greek capital, Europe's 8th largest conurbation, is rapidly becoming a leading business centre in the European Union. This bustling and cosmopolitan metropolis with an urban population of 3.3 million and a metropolitan population of about 3.8 million people is central to economic, financial, industrial, political and cultural life in Greece. The city proper has a land area of 39 km˛ (15 sq mi), while the urban agglomeration of Athens spans 412 km˛ Ancient Athens was a powerful city-state. A center for the arts, learning and philosophy, home of Plato's Akademia and Aristotle's Lyceum, Athens was also the birthplace of Socrates, Pericles, Sophocles and its many other prominent philosophers, writers and politicians of the ancient world. It is widely referred to as the cradle of Western Civilization,[5] and the birthplace of democracy,largely due to the impact of its cultural and political achievements during the 5th and 4th centuries BC on the rest of the then known European continent. Thessaloniki or Salonica  is Greece's second-largest city and the capital of Macedonia, the largest Region of Greece. The Thessaloniki Urban Area extends around the Thermaic Gulf for approximately 17 km and comprises 16 municipalities. According to the 2001 census, the municipality of Thessaloniki had a population of 363,987, while the metropolitan population approximates one million inhabitants.Thessaloniki is Greece's second major economic, industrial, commercial and political centre. It is a major transportation hub for rest of southeastern Europe. Its commercial port is of a great importance for Greece and its southeast European hinterland. The Prime Minister gives his annual governmental speech outlining plans for the year to come from Thessaloniki.
