Another excursion that can be taken , is again from the

you see the village of Palaiokastro. On your left side is
the small church of Agia Sofia . Archaeological ruins from
Palaiokastro and other areas of the islands and kept and

In a relatively small distance you find the small fishing
village of Phoiniki.
Skylax a geographer of the 4th century B.C. and Stravon
refer to the name Arkesia as one of the ancient cities that
the island had, while the name of Arkesia was also found
on scriptures with catalogues of the cities that paid taxes
to Athens.

The excursion
towards central Karpathos goes through the villages
of Aperi, Volada, Othos, Stes Piles, Lefkos, Mesochori
and Spoa.
The first village of Aperi was in the past the capital
of the island and remains up until today the headquarter
of the Metropolite of Karpathos. Aperi is built on
an elevation of 320 meters. After two kilometres you
come across the next village of Volada at 440 meters
from sea level. Othos the next village is built even
higher up, it is at an altitude of 550 meters from
the sea. From Othos you have the best view, as it
is located very high and everything is under your
feet and slowly fades away in the vastness of the
light blue of the sea.
In the village of Othos you will also find the Folklore
museum. After taking a small detour you come across
the village of Stes. It has a few houses and looks
forgotten. After Stes you head towards the village
of Piles. Here you come across more houses some of

of Lefko. You might encounter some trouble with the dirt
road but the you will be justified with Lefko and its
beauties, its crystal clear waters and the rocky coastlines.
From the main road you advance towards Mesochori (the
name Mesochori originates from the fact that the village
is situated approximately in the middle of the island)
from her you follow one of the most beautiful route of
Karpathos as you go through a very thick pine forest..
When you reach Mesochori its beauty will astonish you.
You cannot access the village by car thus giving you a
chance to walk. It has coble-paved streets and traditional
houses built the one very close to each other with their
courtyards paved with pebbles. The Virgin Mary of Vrisiani,
which is the most important church of the village, is
built on a water spring.

of Spoa. At an altitude of 350 meters you will find two-three
