The ancient Gythio, is located in the place Palaiopoli, a little north of the nowadays Gythio, across to the island of Kranais and south - east of Aigion. From the ancient town are still rescued ruins of building with mosaic floor, aqueduct, temple of the emperor August and Tivierou, bath and theater from the time of Roman period. 

According to the mythology, from the island of Kranai the Beautiful Helen justify with Paris for Troia and begun the famous Trojan War. Here you 'll sea the wonderful stone castle of Jani Grigoraki, 3rd bey of Mani, which was building the last years of Turkey Times and today is working as Historical Ethnological Museum of Mani.

The church of Agious Pantes on the top of the mountain Koumaros, from where you'll enjoy the panoramic view towards Gythio and the Laconian Gulf. The medieval castle is 10 kilometers from Gythio, on the road for Areopoli. Despite the disasters that has sustained, it still hold his towers from his machicolation.

The Archeological Museum is billeted to the Town Hall and contains Byzantine collection. Between the archeological finds that there are, are selected the graven epigraphs on stones from the Archaic Times, ceramic finds and many statues by the Romaic Times.
