GENERAL INFO

Folegandros is a small island with an area of 32 square meters that is situated between the islands of Milos and Sikinos. It has an oblong shape with its length reaching 13 klms and a maximum width of 3,7 klms. In the middle of the island the width gets smaller and is limited to 1 klm.

In this point it seems as thought Folegandros is divided in two parts that have approximately the same length, while in this narrow point, two bays are created, Plaka and Vathi. The island is mountainous and rocky. The highest mountain is Agios Eleftherios with an altitude of 455 meters. Were few areas are cultivated and they produce oil, wine, figs and honey. They also raise goats and produce very tasty cheese.

In the past Folegandros had two communities, but with the Kapodistria scheme now there is only one community that administratively falls under the district of Thira, at the prefecture of Cyclades.

The climate is pleasurable. There is of course quite some humidity due to the sea but nevertheless there are also the northerly winds that are pretty dry. The temperature rises in the middle of May and June while during the summer the northeastern winds make sure that there is some coolness.

A characteristic about the natural environment of Folegandros is its lack of vegetation. This is made worse because goats graze throughout the island. Nevertheless because of the warm and pleasant climate someone will come across a large selection of wild flowers with dark blue color, daisies, bright red or light blue flowers and deep red poppies, during spring.

Mountains

Folegandros comprises of a passageway for a number of migrating birds that fly through during spring from Africa towards Europe and in autumn they return from Europe to Africa. Some of the most rare species are the mayropetritis and aigaioglaros.

Folegandros belongs geologically to the "EasternCycladic cluster". There are many rocks slates and marbles. In the ashes white marble layers, various slates are noticed and within the slates you will notice thin layers of marble. There are also green slates, blue slates with an alteration of marble. From minerals magnesium, quartz, biotite and calcite can be found on the island.

Volcanic Rocks

City at night

Even though it is located between two volcanic centers,
Milos on the west and Santorini on the Northeast the island does not carry any maternal volcanic rocks.
