The  Samaria's  ravine


The picturesque sea or mountainous villages, which live in their rhythm the most famous ravine from the most beautiful of Europe,the sheer Leyka Oroi the boundless beaches of Liviko Pelagos, the virgin sea of Western Crete the small islands dreamy shelters compound the landscape.

A view of wild nature beauty full of light and sea, which from the first time captures the visitors and detaches the return’s promise.

The most famous and perhaps the most fantastic ravine of Europe. To travel it, it needs almost five hours of walking. This ravine is being gone all over torrents and sometimes its sides are uplifted to 600m.


Palaiochora

Some sightseeing of the region is Spilies Zoures and Charakas near to Azogures village where 99 persons became ascetics in 1330 when they came from Egypt, Cyprus and Attalia trough Gauros. Here you will be able to visit “ The nature museum” with its unique evergreen plane tree.
Palaiochora has 2150 inhabitants and it is the center of eleven villages. It is thought to have the place of the ancient Dorrian city Kalamidi , it is 74 km from Chania.

The picturesque sea village and a lot of other elements of traditions have been scarified for the sake of tourism. It has a lot of people all the summer. Palaiochora’s pride is Paxias Ammo’s beach, which is the most beautiful beach in all Crete.

Small ships connect the village with Sougia, Agia Roumeli, Chora Sfakion and island Gauros. There are also the tourism offices which almost every day organize excursions for Samaria’s ravine.

You can also visit the small ravine of Anidroi - Gianiskaroi and the historic museum, which concludes pictures, Byzantine talismans and other exhibit from the daily life of the last centuries.
